One of my favorite places in the world. I just love going out there, not only for the plants. The proprieter Robert is a great bloke, very friendly and generous with his time and effort. Which I personally appreciatte greatly. Alot of my plants originate from there and they are some of my most prized cacti. Robert has a truly amazing collection, which goes back 80-90 or more years years now. Started by Roberts father, who started collecting cacti from their 1st inception into horticulture in this country and also was a share holder in the 1935 Blossfeld's expedition. Numerous plants originate from Friedrich Ritter who actually came to the farm way back when, seeking employment, as Ritters sister had been a pen pal of the original Mr Fields, and he had infact helped the Ritter family with food packages in a time of need. As there was no employment for Ritter he continued on his way and became the cacti legend he did. And supplying many of the plants Robert displays today. Other plants were sourced from various other places all around the world, building one of the best collections there is, full stop. If you live in Australia and are into cacti, it's almost a holy pilgrimage. You just have to see it if you can, it is more than worth the effort. I know everytime I go there I'm in a trance, mezmerized by these giant old cacti glistening in the sun. It is truly a very special place. To visit the farm you need to make an appointment by phone before hand. You can reach the proprieter Robert Fields by phone at: (03) 54882244. If he isn't home he always leaves the answering machine on, so leave a message and he will get back to you. The farm is located near Tennyson, northern Victoria not far from Echuca. One more thing I would like to ad is please remember that the garden is not a shop, it is not a business, it is a labour of love. So please treat it, and Robert with the respect they deserve. I've been lucky enough to have been out there a few times over the last couple of years and here's a bunch of pics I've taken. Enjoy :)

Hello Brett. Thanks for the great photos of the cactus garden. You are welcome anytime. It is wonderful to share our garden with someone who loves the plants. It is a big job on my own and nature has taken its toll. I look forward to seeing you again soon. Robert Field
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you Robert! I hope everything is well with you and the garden. I have been meaning to get back out and see you but have been having some trouble finding a new job and am quite stretched at the moment. As soon as I am able to I will be back out there to see you for sure. Best wishes, Brett.
